Marilyn Wortman Volunteer Appreciation Award
Kathy Mankin was honored as the recipient of the 2026 Marilyn Wortman Volunteer Appreciation Award for her dedication and unwavering service to the Memorial Hospital Thrift Shop.
Marilyn Wortman, who was the driving force behind the Hospital Auxiliary since its inception in 1963, created a culture of volunteerism that continues to thrive today because of her selfless dedication and gifted leadership. In her honor, this award recognizes an individual who exemplifies the hard work, commitment, and compassion that Marilyn embodied. Kathy is a shining example of those qualities.
After 30 years of service in the community, Kathy’s volunteer journey with Memorial Hospital began in 2008 with a simple conversation during one of her daily walks. What started as a suggestion to volunteer at the Thrift Shop quickly turned into years of faithful service. From the beginning, Kathy became an essential part of the Thrift Shop team, taking great pride in managing the cash registers, preparing deposits, and ensuring each day started smoothly. For many years, she could be counted on to open the shop promptly, greeting the day with reliability and a welcoming presence.
Though she stepped away from handling cash in 2024 after 13 years, Kathy’s commitment has never wavered. She continues to open the store multiple days each week, often accompanied by her loyal companion, Ila, while still making time for her grandchildren. Her dedication to serving others extends beyond the Thrift Shop, as seen in her ongoing care and maintenance of a local park project she initially worked on with her granddaughter.
For 18 years, Kathy has demonstrated a quiet but profound commitment to helping others. Like Marilyn Wortman herself, Kathy has a heart of compassion and a genuine desire to serve, making a meaningful difference in the lives of those around her. She truly exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding volunteer.
